Working from the Margins: Trade Unions and the challenge of precarious work in Malawi (February 2019 – June 2019)
This is an ongoing collaborative research project between the Malawian Congress of Trade Unions, and academics at Heriot-Watt University and the University of St Andrews.
The funding is initially for a networking trip for colleagues from the Malawian Congress of Trade Unions (MCTU) to the UK. Together we have identified key research priorities regarding precarious work and disability for the MCTU and will introduce interested parties to each other to help establish a wider Malawi-UK collaborative research network. Further funding accessed from GCRF at Heriot-Watt University involves a small piece of empirical research. The grant was co-authored with MCTU colleagues, and the focus is on unionised workers and how they work with and around disability. The project has been deliberately designed so as to be adaptive and responsive to the needs and priorities of colleagues at MCTU, and the full research schedule will be finalised when they visit project PIs and researchers in May this year.
