Shared decision making (health)

Shared decision making is when health professionals and patients work together. This puts people at the centre of decisions about their own treatment and care. Explore further with these NICE guidelines.

NHS England has more information and a summary guide for people and organisations leading local implementation of shared decision making.

Shared decision making: a model for clinical practice from The Health Foundation aims to translate existing conceptual descriptions of shared decision making int a three-step model that is practical, easy to remember, and can act as a guide to skills development.

The Cardiff and Wales University Health Board also have a some useful resources and guides.

Making Choices Together is a movement to encourage open conversations between patients and their clinicians to make decisions together about the right care for the patient informed by good evidence and responsive to the needs and wishes of the patient.

Shared decision making requires a shift in attitudes at all levels but can become part of routine practice with the right support, say Natalie Joseph-Williams and colleagues in their BMJ article.
